Gerenzel is 15 years old, but she only started walking at 5. The reason for this is epidermolysis bullosa, a rare genetic disease. In this disease, any mechanical effect on the skin – pressure or friction – leads to the formation of blisters, similar to burns, which then turn into wounds. It was because of the constant wounds on her feet that Gerenzel could not walk, and when she walked, she stepped exclusively on her heels.
Mother Gerenzel found out about the Butterfly Children Foundation only when her daughter was 8 years old. Since then, the foundation has been helping Gerenzel with bandages. Thanks to this, the situation with leg wounds has changed for the better.
Rehabilitation specialists taught Gerenzel how to walk correctly with the support of the whole foot. The girl was able to go to full-time school, and was very happy to communicate with her peers. Today, Gerenzel is a teenager, and her passion is anime.
Gerenzel needs special expensive soft bandages that will protect her from wounds like a second skin.
