Scientists believe that this winter period may be the last for the population of relict blue foxes from Medny Island. They may all die of hunger. In the 1960s, the Commander Islands became a protected area and fox hunting ceased. However, the number of animals remained at an average of 200-250 individuals. This was due to the fact that the number of animals that the foxes fed on had decreased, and they began to run out of food. A 2024 study showed that the number of foxes had reached a critical level! Of all the previously recorded fox burrows, only 20% were inhabited! In order to help the Arctic foxes survive the winter on the island, the Nature and People Foundation is collecting funds to provide additional feeding for the animals. Dog food is suitable for feeding, as it has a long shelf life. The situation is complicated by the fact that due to weather conditions, navigation opportunities in the Medny Island area are limited - it ends already at the end of September. Therefore, funds must be collected as soon as possible.
