Even a temporary separation from family is a huge emotional challenge for a child. That is why we do everything we can to prevent children from being placed in orphanages, even during the most difficult periods in a family’s life.
In December, the “Better at Home” project received a request to help a mother of two children who had been hospitalized for long-term treatment. Her daughter was only 2 months old, and her older son was 11.
We quickly found a temporary host family for the children — a family that had already welcomed children for temporary care before. While their mother was receiving treatment and recovering, both children were surrounded by warmth, care, and safety with adults who were ready to support them during a difficult time.
When the mother was transferred to a rehabilitation center where she could live together with her children, her son was able to return to her immediately. However, the reunion with her daughter had to be postponed because of a quarantine at the center.
And finally, in March 2026, the long-awaited reunion between mother and daughter took place!
Today the family is together again, and the mother speaks with deep gratitude about the temporary family who surrounded her daughter with love and care during the very first months of her life.
Thanks to your support, 20 children were able to live with temporary host families instead of being placed in orphanages.
