At the age of one, Sonya was diagnosed with Phelan-McDermitt syndrome. This is a rare genetic disorder that leads to delayed psychomotor and speech development. Children with this syndrome speak very little or do not speak at all, have problems with muscle tone and, accordingly, lag behind in development. Sofia was examined in Moscow at the N.P. Bochkov Medical and Genetic Research Center. The diagnosis was confirmed. Sonya's parents worked hard with her, so at the age of one and a half years she was able to walk on her own. But weak muscle tone still remains. Sonya is now 9 years old, and as she grows, she has started having problems with her hip joints. Today, the girl has subluxations of the hip joints on both sides, scoliosis, and adducted feet. Due to the hypermobility of the joints, doctors are not performing surgery yet, they are observing and waiting for Sonya to stop growing so intensively. Doctors advise: Sonya definitely needs to strengthen her muscle corset, ankle and knee joints.
