Ulyana is 11 years old, and she starts 5th grade. Ulya is modest yet sociable. If you get to know her better, she will probably tell you about her friends and hobbies and show her paintings. The professional artist gives Ulyana regular lessons. It comes as no surprise that Fine Arts is one of the girl’s favorite school subjects.
However, painting is also important for her because it involves fine motor skills. Holding a brush in your hand for a long time, carefully painting the details is physical activity. Ulyana has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 2. It is the rare genetic disease which causes gradual muscle weakness and loss of movement.
In late spring, Ulyana stayed in ‘The Lighthouse’ as an in-patient. Here she played board games with the other children and babysitters, came to the garden with her mother, and drew some landscapes. In short, she had a good time. She once said that she wanted to see the sea hoping there would be no jellyfish at the beach. Ulyana definitely would make a painting to depict it and keep it in memory.
During her hospital stay some medical issues were resolved. A physical therapist of the ‘The Lighthouse’ recommended an electric wheelchair with a headrest so Ulya could use it on her own and sit correctly. For some time, maintaining a good posture became difficult because Ulyana has a curvature of her spine. Apart from the wheelchair, an orthopedic corset was recommended for the girl. It would help stop the spine from curving further and fix her posture.
