Today, for people with multiple developmental disabilities whose families cannot care for them at home, the state offers only one option — a psychoneurological institution. However, such facilities do not ensure a decent quality of life or respect for a person’s rights to communication, self-fulfillment, and meaningful activity. An alternative to institutional care is supported living: apartments or houses where people with severe disabilities live in small groups with the support of specialists and volunteers.
Two years ago, “Perspektivy” opened a supported living apartment in St. Petersburg. Five people with developmental disabilities moved in from institutions and family homes. Here, they started living an independent, ordinary adult life. Each person has their own room, personal belongings, hobbies, and responsibilities: keeping the place clean, cooking meals, doing the shopping. They learn to take initiative, make their own choices about what to wear, what to cook for lunch, where to go, and how to spend their time.
Your donation will help us pay for the essential work of a social worker who supports the residents every day — assisting with daily tasks, hygiene, and outings.
