Askar is only two years old, but he has already endured significant challenges. He was born with a congenital immunodeficiency, meaning his body is almost completely vulnerable to infections. Because of this, a common cold can be life-threatening (he also suffers from frequent bronchitis and ear infections, hearing loss, pneumonia, and critically low hemoglobin). The illness has also severely impacted the little boy's development. Askar is still unable to crawl or walk independently—his muscles are too weak due to hypotonia. These difficulties have recently been compounded by joint inflammation, which causes constant pain and further limits his movement. Fortunately, doctors have found a way to alleviate Askar's condition—a special, expensive medication that will reduce inflammation in the body, relieve pain, and allow the child to develop.
