At three and a half years old, Yulia was diagnosed with leukemia, a blood cancer. After chemotherapy, the disease subsided, but serious consequences set in. She suffered a stroke-like brain edema: she lost the ability to speak and walk, and began losing her hair. Doctors later diagnosed focal epilepsy, which caused her seizures and exacerbations to become more frequent. Despite this, Yulia persevered: she worked with a tutor at home, relearned how to read and write, and mastered checkers and even chess.
Yulia is currently struggling to adapt to school: she has difficulty remembering information, gets lost in large spaces, has poor sense of timekeeping, and is acutely sensitive to the reactions of her peers, who don't always understand her condition. Overall, Yulia still has many health problems, so her treatment and recovery are ongoing.
But Yulia has a real chance to improve her health. The Bereginya Foundation is raising funds for a rehabilitation course at the Healthy Childhood Medical Center (Yekaterinburg), which will help the girl recover, return to a pain-free life, and regain her self-confidence. Rehabilitation will begin in May, and we hope that together we can help her!
