Almost eight years ago, in a Dagestani village near Makhachkala, fragile Amina was born to her mother Alzhanat. Doctors discovered the disease of osteogenesis imperfecta only a year later, when X-rays showed numerous healed fractures. The already difficult disease was complicated by mild anaemia and mineral metabolism problems.
Two years later there was a new addition to the Dayakaev family - Amina's little brother Umar, also "fragile" like his sister, was born.
The children broke down after each other, and their mother was torn between them, trying to help both babies at the same time. Amina and Umar have more than twenty fractures between them - 18 for Amina and 'only' 3 for her lucky brother. Like many children with complex diagnoses, she and her brother dream of becoming doctors in the future in order to treat the frail.
The children were treated at the Turner Research Institute in St Petersburg, where they received courses of pamidronic acid therapy. In 2018 and 2019, with the support of the Fragile People Foundation, the children underwent complex operations at the Children's Health Research Centre in Moscow - they were fitted with "growing", telescopic pins to strengthen their fragile bones and protect them from new fractures. For a while the children and their mother forgot about the fractures and enjoyed life. Amina walked confidently and began to learn.
Everything was going well until last week, on September 23rd, 2021, Amina suffered a bone fracture and the pin bent. Right now an emergency surgery is needed to remove the old pin and replace it with a new one. The doctors at the NIC Child Health Centre are ready to operate on the girl as soon as possible. But unfortunately the clinic has no quotas for MHI treatment this year, so the operation and the pin itself have to be paid for. The doctor told Alzhanat "Look for money, urgently!
Amina needs 403,985 roubles to help her. The family cannot afford to pay this on their own, all the funds are already thrown into the ongoing treatment of the children.
