Polina is 17 years old. Developmental delays were noticed at the age of two. At age nine, she was diagnosed with ASD, and in fifth grade, she began experiencing epileptic seizures. She is currently homeschooled.
In July 2025, an MRI revealed right-sided mesial temporal sclerosis and dysplastic changes in the right amygdala. Mesial temporal sclerosis is a degenerative condition characterized by atrophic changes in the hippocampus (the medial part of the temporal lobe), leading to a reduction in its size and compensatory widening of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle. In February, Polina and her mother visited the Burdenko National Medical Research Center of Neurosurgery for a consultation. A full examination and possible surgery await.
Before this, full genome sequencing is necessary: this will help rule out a genetic basis for the disease (otherwise, the surgery may be ineffective) and select an effective treatment protocol to stop epileptic seizures. Every contribution brings Polina closer to an accurate diagnosis and a chance for a stable life. Please help the doctors find the right treatment for Polina!
