We met Styopa this year at an orphanage in Cheboksary. He's seven years old, and he's a remarkably kind and sociable child. Styopa has cerebral palsy, and his self-care skills are still developing—for example, he can't yet dress himself, button his clothes, or brush his teeth. He has some coordination issues, requiring adult supervision for every step. But Styopa strives to learn everything, imitates his elders, and loves listening to stories and songs, memorizing them and singing them.
Upon arriving in Moscow, the boy was immediately taken to the hospital. There, he was scheduled for an examination, and there wasn't a single familiar face around. To ensure Styopa wasn't left alone, the Road of Life foundation assigned him a nanny who stayed with him 24/7: feeding him, reading him stories, comforting him, and holding his hand before procedures.
To ensure that every orphan who comes to Moscow for treatment has a nanny, the foundation employs a senior nanny. She assigns the children to the caregivers, orders medications, and everything necessary for their care. Thanks to the senior nanny, each child is assigned to the person best suited to them: some require strictness, others require affection, some are very active, and some can't even sit up.
