Ernest was born a true giant, weighing 4,050 grams. A healthy, strong baby, he grew and developed until he was six months old. But in November 2015, he fell ill.
Ernest was prescribed treatment, but his condition only worsened. Ernest was taken to intensive care, and a week later, he began having seizures and was placed in a medically induced coma. What was thought to be stomatitis turned out to be herpetic meningoencephalitis – an inflammation of the membranes and tissue of the brain.
The disease affected 90% of his cerebral cortex, and Ernest lost all skills. He is now at home. The boy has many comorbidities, including epilepsy, optic atrophy, and drug-induced hepatitis. In May, Ernest developed angioedema due to allergies; he stopped eating and drinking and began breathing poorly. He received gastro- and tracheostomies.
"Every year, care becomes more difficult, and new health problems arise. We purchase a lot of medications, special food, and personal care products ourselves. Today, our son is completely dependent on oxygen; Ernest requires a portable oxygen concentrator to be able to leave the house. The state can't provide it, so we have to ask a foundation for help," his mother says.
