Safia has been successfully operated, her eyesight was saved!

Safiya is first and only child is being raised by a single mum Irodakhon. Her father abandoned them when she was a year old. On the second day after she was born, Safiya had her first epilepsy attack. The seizures during this period were up to 30 times a day. Neither strong medication nor hormonal injections helped the baby girl (due to these conditions Safiya was hospitalized for 2 months). As a result, little Safiya was already taking four strong medications at the same time, which affected her overall development. At 8 months, Safiya could not hold her head or look at people. Doctors in Irkutsk city told the mother that the baby had blindness. However, Irodakhon did not give up and she found The Voyno-Yasenetsky Research and Practical Centre for Children's Specialized Medical Care in Moscow where she underwent a full examination. Physicians at this Centre had some of her previously used medications withdrawn. Safiya had a successful brain surgery when she reached a one year old age. Eventually, her epilepsy seizures went away. However, it turned out that during this year, Safiya's optic nerves were badly damaged: the epileptogenic focus was close to the part of the brain that is responsible for vision. Because of this, Safiya now has severe strabismus and nystagmus. Everyone who sees the little girl asks what is wrong with her eyes. Doctors in Irkutsk refused to perform a surgery to help Safiya with this ailment. However, the ophthalmologists from the Solntsevo Research Centre promised to cope with the problem if Safiya and her mum will be able to fully pay the costs of surgery and in-patient care. Ophthalmologists plan to perform a treatment which encompasses a three-stage operation: first an injection into one eye muscle, then, after monitoring by doctors for several months, into the other. Safiya is now a year and a half old. She cannot walk or sit, but she can already crawl and speak out some separate words. We could help her to cope with all the difficulties she is going through - we could raise funds for the surgery, which will return her eyesight to normal, because all the family money is spent on almost constant rehabilitation, treatment and travelling from Irkutsk to Moscow clinics. The first stage of the operation, which costs 62,800 roubles, is scheduled for the 30th November!
