Umutai is 'fragile' but very strong and resilient. Since birth she has been struggling with congenital bone fragility. The Fragile People Foundation helped to raise funds for rehabilitation courses and gave the little girl the opportunity to train regularly under the supervision of specialists.
On the advice of the physical therapist of our Mobile Rehabilitation Service project, the girl's family bought a standing machine. With this machine Umutai is learning to get on her feet. Now the "fragile" girl can stand for about an hour a day, and it is hard to believe that in the first three months she could not move at all.
Recently a problem has appeared in Umutai's life, which has to be solved. The girl is growing and gaining weight, and this is causing the fragile bones in her legs to begin to deform and break. Doctors at the National Institute of Child Health are ready to insert telescopic pins, which will "grow" with Umutai, giving her a chance to stand on her feet confidently.
