And so the girl finds a way to hide from her illness. For 20 years she has been living like a “butterfly”. This is the name given to people with a rare genetic disorder, epidermolysis bullosa. Because of this ailment, Bayard's skin became fragile and tender, like the wings of those same butterflies. Any careless movement can result in a serious injury - first, small swellings appear on the skin, which turn into a painful, non-healing wound. To avoid pain, the girl has to protect herself from the outside world - this requires special dressings and creams that need to be constantly treated with the skin. These are expensive drugs that take up most of the family's savings. Bayard has a dystrophic form of BE, the disease has given serious complications. Now she cannot walk and she needs orthoses - these are special devices designed for the needs of the girl.
