At the 20th week of Yulia’s pregnancy – Olya’s mom –, the specialists discovered a spina bifida during screening and sent the mom for an operation to remove the child’s hernia in utero, which was not entirely successful.
Olya was born prematurely, at 31 weeks of pregnancy, with dislocations of the hip joints. On the 5th day of life the baby underwent surgery to install a shunt, and at 1 month the specialists began to plaster her legs to treat dislocations. Little Olya’s troubles did not end there: she suffered from meningitis, pneumonia, obstructive bronchitis and sepsis. In total, Olya underwent 10 operations: 7 - on the brain and 3 - on the spinal cord, after which she re-learned simple things: to drink, eat, interact with loved ones.
Now Olya is 4 years old. She cannot get on her feet or stand. The ergotherapist, who observes the baby, recommended training on a specialized exercise bike with reliable leg fasteners. Due to this exercise bike Olya will be able to learn to move her legs, turn the pedals, hold the steering wheel, not arch or hunch her back and feel her mobility and independence.
