When he was 5 months old, Kolya started to hit his ears and scream a lot. The audiologist diagnosed Kolya as having a hearing loss grade 4. The diagnosis was confirmed and Kolya was referred for cochlear implantation. “I felt like the world had collapsed,” my mother recalls at the time, ”My parents, mother-in-law, father-in-law, friends, all relatives supported us as best they could.” After the implants that opened up the world of sounds for him, Kolya is still just getting to grips with it. After such a late start, it takes a tremendous amount of effort for Kolya to be able to speak for the first time.
