Sensitive and emotional Katya felt for the first time in her life that she had taken a back seat when her family welcomed her adopted brother, Andrey. She experienced a whole range of emotions — from love to hatred. Meanwhile, her parents tried to love and accept the new family member, setting boundaries, while what was happening with their daughter went unnoticed — their main focus was on the adopted child.
As a result, Katya ended up in foster care, where she submitted a request stating that she could no longer live at home.
The foundation specialists immediately came to the rescue, discussed the situation with the parents, and recommended they visit psychologists: a group session for parents and children called “Connecting Thread” to help rebuild relationships, provide support, and foster understanding, and individual sessions for Andrey with a child psychologist to help him adjust to the family.
The parents, as if meeting their daughter anew, apologized and admitted they hadn’t realized how hard it had been for her. It’s important for both Katya and Andrey to continue their work with psychologists in the near future.
