A month after her birth, Khadija began to have difficulty breathing and was crying constantly. Her parents took her to the doctors, but it took some time to identify the cause. After extensive tests, it emerged that the girl had a congenital heart defect and needed an operation.
They were unable to help Khadija in her home country. The family travelled from Tajikistan to Russia, where doctors confirmed the diagnosis and the need for surgery.
At the moment, Khadija is struggling to gain weight, gets tired quickly and is lagging behind in her development. She is not yet able to sit up on her own and cries constantly. Her mum hardly ever puts her down. It is only by rocking her and singing songs to her that she manages to calm the child for a short while.
Surgery will help correct her heart defect. Treatment in Russia is not free for foreign nationals. The family cannot afford it at present, but the operation cannot be postponed.
