Help baby Martin fight pneumonia

Even our weathered doctors and nurses have a hard time treating little patients from preventable and treatable diseases brought by unfortunate living conditions and lack of proper healthcare. Amalia has recently visited our clinic in Nicaragua with her infant son Martin. The mother told the doctors that her boy “was burning up and panting a lot.” Amalia and four of her children live in a house with plastic walls and when it rains, the water falls into the hammocks where the kids sleep. And since old plastic walls are full of holes, their tiny house has drafts all over. After thorough examination, the doctors at Health & Help clinic diagnosed Martin with pneumonia and prescribed antibiotics, oxygen therapy, and fever-reducing medicine. Pneumonia is one of the deadliest infectious diseases among children under five. It takes over 800,000 children every year, or around 2,200 every day. In Nicaragua, where Martin lives, pneumonia is one of the major causes of death for infants and toddlers. Most deaths from infectious diseases are preventable through early diagnosis and treatment. Our doctors at Health & Help clinics aim to provide the patients with timely medical attention and teach them the signs of infectious diseases.
