We met Galina Alekseevna and Alikhan during one of our trips to the street. By that time, the 75-year-old mother and her son had been on the street for three days: they had rented a room, but because of a conflict with neighbours, they were left without accommodation and slept on benches in the cold.
We took the elderly woman and her son by ambulance to the Charity Clinic. Galina Alekseevna told us that when she was young she had been in a car accident, suffered a multiple fracture of her leg, and since then she has been suffering from severe pain, it is difficult for her to step on her leg. She often has headaches, high blood pressure, and can hardly see out of one eye.
She moved to St Petersburg to live with her son in the ‘noughties’, after her husband died. Soon she was diagnosed with cancer, underwent surgery, and for 20 years Galina has been living with a colostomy.
The clinic's doctors examined the patient, gave her pain medication, blood pressure medication, and the necessary medical supplies free of charge. After medical care the family was taken to a heating centre, and now Galina Alekseevna sleeps in warmth. Now we are considering the issue of placing the pensioner in a hospice - she needs specialised treatment.
