Every day, new animals arrive at the shelter. Many of them look healthy, but their outward appearance can hide deadly viruses. Some diseases are airborne, others are transmitted through saliva, scratches or even a shared bowl. Without timely diagnosis, infection can spread to dozens of animals, jeopardizing their lives.
We are launching a fundraiser for rapid tests to detect immunodeficiency and leukemia in cats and parvovirus in dogs. These tests will help us quickly determine which of our charges need special care and protection. Feline immunodeficiency is a viral disease that affects a cat's immune system, is transmitted through bites and scratches, and can be asymptomatic for years. The virus weakens the body, leaving the cat vulnerable to infections that eventually lead to its death.
Parvovirus in dogs is a dangerous virus that affects the gastrointestinal tract. It most often affects puppies, but can also affect adult dogs. The virus spreads rapidly in the shelter and requires immediate isolation of ill dogs.
Rapid testing is a chance to detect the virus in time to isolate the sick animal and begin treatment. This is not just a test, but an opportunity to save hundreds of lives. Help us keep the shelter and its residents safe!
