The baby's heart problems were discovered at a routine check-up when she turned one year old. Aileen was admitted to hospital with a viral infection, doctors carried out an examination and found she had a congenital heart defect - an interventricular septal defect.
‘We were reassured, wait a bit, the hole in the heart will heal itself. But after three months, not only did it not heal, but new ones appeared. The doctors said we couldn't wait any longer, we needed an operation,’ says Nadira, Aileen's mother.
