After a severe injury, 58-year-old Alexander Freger is learning to walk and talk again. In March 2021, his life was divided into "before" and "after" when he fell on a ski slope, resulting in a subdural hematoma, coma, and emergency skull trepanation. He spent a month unconscious, weeks separated from his loved ones due to COVID-19 restrictions, and upon waking up, he was completely helpless. Doctors saved his life, but he returned home with a first-degree disability and a completely different person.
However, his wife, Olga, did not give up. Since June 2021, their common struggle has begun. Six rehabilitation courses, an operation to install a titanium plate in the skull, and endless sessions with speech therapists, physiotherapists, and neurologists. And the results have come: Alexander has started saying individual words, taking steps with support and a cane, and learning to dress and shave on his own. Every new word, every step, is a true victory.
The center's doctors are confident that the next course will allow Alexander to hold food in his right hand, dress himself, and walk with support. The main goal is to maximize his independence and return to a normal life.
Thanks to the support of Tooba users, Alexander's path to rehabilitation is now open. This rehabilitation will be another bold step towards a life where he can walk around his room, say "I love you" to his loved ones, and simply hold an apple in his hand to enjoy its taste.
