Every child needs a reliable adult — someone who will offer support in difficult times and help them understand themselves and the world around them. In a family, this role is usually taken on by close relatives. But teenagers in orphanages often have no such person nearby.
To ensure that orphaned children have a dependable adult who can help them adapt to adult life, our foundation trains mentors.
For Alyona, a resident of an orphanage, we found a mentor — Anna, a mother of two and an entrepreneur. Anna teaches Alyona how to shop and manage her time. To learn how to handle money, Alyona works part-time in Anna’s project — at a healthy lifestyle museum, where she takes photos, runs quizzes and games, and helps with paperwork.
Inspired by Anna’s example, Alyona decided to start her own project — a festival for children from orphanages and their mentors.
Children who have mentors become more engaged in life and school, and they begin to make plans for their future. They are better able to integrate into adult life after leaving the orphanage. The cost of supporting one mentor-mentee pair for a year covers the mentor program manager’s salary, the cost of the training platform for mentor candidates, and expenses related to attracting new candidates.
