The Nature and People Foundation will use the funds raised to support the Bear Patrol team in the village of Neshkan in Chukotka, so that it can prevent polar bears from entering the village.
The polar bear is a rare predator and a symbol of the Arctic. Ice is a platform for hunting, reproduction and seasonal movement. Due to climate change, the ice cover of the Arctic seas is shrinking and the polar bear is forced to spend more time on the land and meet people more often.
Every appearance of a predator in a village is an emergency situation that requires an immediate response. Although polar bears are not aggressive by nature, ignorance of the behavioral characteristics of this predator can provoke a dangerous conflict. Therefore, in some Arctic villages, volunteer associations - "Bear Patrols" - have been created. They drive away the polar bear before it reaches places where humans are present.
Over the past 3 years, the largest number of polar bear visits and drive-aways has been recorded in Chukotka, including in the village of Neshkan. Thanks to "Bear Patrols", only a minimal percentage of these visits have ended in serious conflicts. Help supply the patrol in the village of Neshkan with safe means of repelling polar bears and fuel, which are needed for regular monitoring of the territory adjacent to the village.
