Thank you for your contribution to the study and conservation of bowhead whales in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk!

Polar whales are an ancient and unique Arctic species. They live up to 200 years and can sing! This is one of the most important indicators of the state of the fragile Arctic ecosystems. Okhotsk polar whales, listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation, spend their entire lives in Russian waters. The population of polar whales in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk is declining and is at risk of extinction - its number does not exceed 400 individuals. Scientists do not yet know the specific reasons for the decline in the overall population that have been proven by research. To help these majestic sea creatures survive, we need to learn more about them. Therefore, the Nature and People Foundation is organizing scientific expeditions to Nikolay Bay and Uda Bay in the summer of 2025. There, experts will assess the whale population, install tags to search for and study their habitats and migration routes, collect biopsy samples, general data to supplement the photo and genetic catalog of individuals, and analyze the food supply by studying zooplankton. Based on the data obtained, scientists will be able to develop comprehensive recommendations for the conservation of the species. The Nature and People Foundation continues to prepare for long and expensive expeditions – support the project so that scientists can carry out all the necessary preparatory work and go to sea in July.
