It all started with the fact that in a maternity hospital in a small district town Salim's newborn hearing was not checked. So Salim first came to the ENT when he was four months old and suffered from otitis media, and it was found out too late that the boy couldn't hear. Time that all healthy children spend on mastering speech, listening to adults, and building up a vocabulary, Salim spent on treatment for otitis and waiting for hearing aids.
Now, even though he can hear thanks to special processors implanted in his ears, the time lost is reflected in his delayed speech development - retardation is listed on his chart as a verdict. And if he does not overcome this delay, he will not be able to master the school curriculum, will not be able to communicate with other children, will be lonely and defenseless, which will further aggravate his difference from healthy children.
But now, while Salim is still young, he can make up for what he missed. He is good and fast at accumulating new words, and even whole phrases, he just needs rehabilitation - the help of specialists who will help him to speak at the same level as his peers.
