The Nature and People Foundation is helping the Orenburg Reserve purchase necessary equipment to care for the only population of Przewalski's horses in Russia. Once, huge herds of Przewalski's horses lived in Western Siberia, Mongolia and China. There are currently about 3,000 of them worldwide. The majority of the population lives in China and Mongolia; in Russia, these horses live in the Orenburg State Nature Reserve. There are currently 115 of them.
Since 2015, a project to create a semi-free population of these animals on the territory of Russia has been implemented here. By 2030, it is planned to create a stable and purebred population of 120-150 horses, in order to subsequently return the species to the wild. An extensive infrastructure was created in the reserve, but some of the equipment has failed after long-term use. Therefore, replacement and an increase in the number of equipment is required.
The foundation will help equip the Reintroduction Center with a gasoline generator, which will provide water to the watering holes for horses kept in acclimatization enclosures. As well as a night vision device and thermal imaging binoculars, which will allow employees not only to collect information about the animals, but also improve the efficiency of monitoring wildfires and searching for violators on the territory at night.
