Children like Katya Shirobokova are called «Twinkletoes». Born in the 25th week, weighing less than a kilogram - this baby spent the first three months of her life in intensive care. But the parents were not intimidated by the long list of their daughter's diagnoses and the problems they now had to deal with. The main thing, of course, was to make sure that Katya could see the world she had come to. Newborns’ retinopathy – is a common diagnosis in such premature infants. The organ of vision is delicate and complex. If it does not have time to fully form in the mother's belly, it has to be "grown ripe" after birth. In the first months of her life, Katya underwent many surgical interventions, but the doctors were not able to fix everything. Now Katya doesn’t perceive what she sees in full volume as people with binocular vision do. Her world is stretched into a flat picture and doubled. One eye sees two brothers, and the other eye also sees two. Due to visual perception defect, difficulties in movement and communication appear, plus crossed-eye is growing - now both Katya's eyes are looking at the same point. Therefore, amblyopia develops: the so-called "lazy eye" - a condition of vision atrophy. Luckily an advanced western technique has been adapted in Russia: botulinum toxin injections allow correcting strabismus without serious surgical interventions, anesthesia and the long rehabilitation period. The results are encouraging. And the parents hope that Katya soon will be able to focus on voluminous beauty of this world. But first we need to focus on Katya. And help her.
