Fatima is 14 years old. Three years ago, she was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, and later, with an innate immunodeficiency — Chronic Granulomatous Disease. This means her body cannot fight off infections on its own.
Fatima is on a combined therapy that includes immunosuppressive, antimicrobial, and antibacterial drugs. This treatment has allowed her to return to a normal life: she graduated from art school, enjoys playing chess, and dreams of becoming a doctor. In public places, Fatima always wears a mask — a necessary precaution.
But now, her course of treatment is at risk. A critically important drug, part of her therapy regimen, is not procured in her region. An interruption in taking this medication is incredibly dangerous and could lead to the return of severe inflammation.
