«Mommy, where does it hurt? I'll make it better!» With these words, five-year-old Bogdan picks up his toy stethoscope. His dream of becoming a doctor who saves everyone from pain was born for a reason. The boy himself has endured numerous severe and dangerous illnesses: coronavirus, bilateral pneumonia, meningitis - after which he had to relearn how to walk and talk.
The reason is that due to a genetic immune system defect, Bogdan's blood lacks crucial protective cells, leaving his body defenseless against any infection, even the most harmless ones.
A year ago, Bogdan had a chance at recovery - he underwent a bone marrow transplant. But after the transplant, a severe complication developed: graft-versus-host disease (where the donor's cells attack the recipient's body, affecting the skin and lungs). Now, Bogdan urgently needs specialized therapy to stop this dangerous complication.
