When a vet cleans a wound, flushes a cat’s eyes or nose, gives an injection, or takes a sample, several pairs of gloves can be used in a single session. This is not a formality. It is basic hygiene and safety for every animal in the shelter.
Gloves are single use and cannot be reused. Otherwise, we risk transferring infection from one animal to another, especially after examining animals with viral or bacterial illnesses. In a shelter where kittens, adult cats, and post-surgery patients live side by side, the cost of a mistake like that is simply too high.
There is also a practical issue. Gloves tear often. Animals get anxious, struggle, and catch the gloves with their claws, so one procedure may require more than one pair.
Right now, we are raising funds for 9,100 pairs of medical gloves in different sizes. We need a reliable supply so our vets and staff can work calmly and safely, without trying to save on something that cannot be compromised.
