Dogs that end up at the Penza-based ‘Pitomets’ shelter from the streets bring with them not only illnesses and injuries, but also a deep fear of people. Some cower in a corner and won’t let anyone near them; others, out of anxiety, lash out at everything around them; still others simply don’t know what it means to live alongside a human. Behind each of these behaviors lies a story — abandonment, cruelty, or simply years of loneliness on the street. Healing such a dog physically is only half the battle. Without behavioral therapy, the dog risks remaining at the shelter indefinitely, even if its test results are normal and its wounds have long since healed.
This is precisely where a dog trainer is indispensable. They work with each dog individually: helping them overcome fear, building trust between the animal and the owner, and teaching basic commands and house rules. For dogs that have experienced trauma or undergone complex surgeries, sessions with a dog trainer become an integral part of their full rehabilitation. These sessions help restore not only physical activity but also inner balance. A dog that has learned not to be afraid, that knows its name and can walk on a leash, is perceived completely differently by potential owners. Its chances of finding a home increase significantly.
The work of a dog trainer is quiet, unobtrusive, yet very important, and its results aren’t immediately visible. But it is precisely thanks to this work that dogs transform from frightened and distrustful creatures into ones people want to take home.
Right now, we need your help to pay for a specialist’s work for one month and give our charges the chance to continue on this journey: from the streets to a real home and a loving family.
