Milana was born with a heart defect—one half of her heart did not develop properly—and she needs constant support to cope with physical exertion.
Right now, the girl needs two essential medications. One helps her heart function, and the other regulates her blood pressure. These medications are not available in Russia—the family orders them from abroad at their own expense. The available generic versions do not help Milana—even the slightest change in the dosage of the active ingredient can lead to cardiac arrest.
Milana is homeschooled. It is difficult for her to make friends: her long and complex treatment has led to cerebral palsy, which cannot be hidden, and children often do not accept those who are different from them. That’s why Milana’s world is quiet and centered around home. She loves to draw, sculpt, and look at books. She can’t read on her own yet, but her mom reads aloud to her every day—and these stories bring Milana a lot of joy.
