Vika suddenly fell seriously ill. In the intensive care unit, she was diagnosed with critically high blood sugar — 45.5. For several days, doctors fought for her life while she was in a coma. At just 8 years old, Vika was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Now, Vika and her mother are learning to live with this new condition. At eight, the girl already knows how to administer insulin injections herself, but sometimes forgets to check her blood sugar levels. Because of this, her mother — a single parent raising children — had to quit her job to ensure constant adult supervision and care.
The family is currently awaiting official disability status, which would allow them to receive medication and medical supplies free of charge. Until then, all purchases of medicines and supplies fall on the mother’s shoulders. Funds are critically low, and test strips and insulin are needed daily. The family has turned to the "Alice" Foundation for support.
Right now, the most urgent priorities are stabilizing Vika’s health and easing the financial burden on her mother, who was forced to leave her job to care for her child.
