By looking at a cat, it's almost impossible to tell whether it is healthy or carrying a dangerous infection. Many viral diseases progress for a long time without symptoms: the animal may just seem tired, while the pathogen is already inside and can easily be transmitted to others. For a shelter where hundreds of cats and dogs live under one roof, this is a serious threat. A single missed infection can lead to an outbreak, and in severe cases, the death of animals.

That is why newcomers are tested using PCR diagnostics. Unlike a regular examination, this test detects the actual disease agent directly, even before symptoms appear, and allows sick animals to be separated from healthy ones in time, without putting the rest at risk. Cats arrive at the center every week, and each one needs to be tested.

Thanks to your donations, the foundation has purchased a batch of PCR tests. This will be enough to screen several dozen new wards. Now, veterinarians have the opportunity to detect hidden infections in advance, rather than when the disease has already spread through the shelter. This protects both the newcomers and those already waiting for their families. Thank you for your help!

Let’s help pay for PCR tests for cats

When a stray cat is brought to the ‘Pitomets’ center, it’s almost impossible to tell just by looking at it whether it’s healthy or carrying a dangerous infection.

Common viral diseases often show no obvious symptoms for a long time but are easily transmitted to others. Even while a cat appears merely tired, the virus is already spreading. That’s why it’s crucial to screen new animals using PCR testing: the test detects the pathogen directly, before the animal has a chance to infect the others. For a shelter housing several hundred cats and dogs at once, this is crucial. A single undetected infection can lead to an outbreak, and some diseases can even result in the animal’s death. A timely test allows us to isolate the sick animal and prevent others from being put at risk.

Cats arrive at our shelter every week, and each one needs to be tested. Right now, the foundation is raising funds for PCR tests — enough to screen several dozen furry friends. By supporting this fundraiser, you’re helping us detect diseases before they cause harm and protecting the animals waiting for their forever homes.
