Milana needs an orthopedic helmet to secure the results of the surgery to correct the shape of her skull.

Even while Milana was still in the womb, her sagittal suture fused, causing her head to take on an elongated shape. The doctors explained to her mother that this sometimes happens during natural childbirth, and that the defect would soon resolve on its own.

Time passed, but nothing changed. The pointed back of Milana's head made it difficult for her to lie flat on her back—her head would tilt to one side or the other. In all other respects, Milana was a typical child—active and curious.

At a routine check-up at three months, the doctors raised the alarm. That was the first time the diagnosis 'scaphocephaly' was mentioned. The prematurely fused skull sutures left no room for her growing brain. When it encounters an insurmountable barrier, there is a high risk of vision and hearing loss, and spikes in intracranial pressure.

Up to six months of age, everything can be corrected with surgery followed by wearing a custom orthosis. The surgeons performed a cranial reconstruction for Milana—her head became the correct shape. As soon as the sutures heal, she will need to wear a special helmet, which will guide her head's growth in the right direction. She will need to wear it constantly for six months. However, such orthoses are not provided under OMS. For her mother, who is raising her daughter alone, this treatment is unaffordable. She needs our help.
