Hearing aids for Yaroslav: his chance to return to life

Yaroslav is 11 years old and has Alport syndrome—a rare genetic disease that destroys the kidneys, hearing, and vision. He is currently waiting for a donor kidney transplant and undergoes dialysis three times a week. But the disease has also taken his hearing: the boy can barely make out speech, hearing only noise and hum. The old hearing aids no longer help.

The diagnosis was made at age 7, although symptoms appeared earlier. Until he was 11, Yaroslav led an active life: he did karting, swimming, and kickboxing, but the disease progressed rapidly, and he had to give up sports. He became withdrawn and stopped smiling. When he first received hearing aids, the world came back to him, but now his hearing has declined again.

New, modern hearing aids would allow Yarik to hear speech effortlessly and communicate with his mother, doctors, and friends. They are not provided through OMS, and his mother cannot afford to buy them herself. The family lives in a rented apartment in Moskva, which is paid for by a charity foundation.
