Few months ago Rustem started to feel exhausted — while working, fishing, or playing football. Slightest physical activity made him feel tired. All the things he needed or loved doing became fatigue. After two weeks he noticed that his lymph nodes were swollen. Then he went to a doctor.
Rustem is 31 years old, for the most of his life he’s been living in Eupatoria town, in Crimea. He embrace a healthy lifestyle — hiking, playing football, or fishing all his free time. Good physical shape has always been essential to him. As a child he participated in every afterschool sports club. When he grew up, he understood that he liked physical labour. So he applied for a job on a construction site.
Few years later on another construction site he suddenly felt tired. You can overcome shortness of breath on a football field, but you can hardly survive it on a construction site. So, he got the blood test done. He just expected to receive some medicine to fix everything. But that’s not what happened. Shortly after the test he was sent to Moscow, where he found out his diagnosis — acute myeloid leukemia.
He started chemo right away. He passed three rounds, overcame infection caused complications and went into remission. But it’s just a little break.
To finally win this, Rustem needs a marrow transplantation. Unfortunately, no one of his relatives can become a donor and there are no compatible local donors. But there’s potentially compatible donor in Germany.
To perform the molecular testing and to cover the costs for the stem cell product, Rustem has to pay 2,43 million rubles.
The Leukemia Foundation is currently raising a part of it — 293 thousands rubles — to start the process, while we raising the rest of the money.
Rustem can’t work for six months now because of the disease, his mother is a school teacher and his father works for a tiny family farm. Two million rubles is a fortune for them.
