Matvey needs a helmet to correct the asymmetry of his skull without surgery.

Five-month-old Matvey has positional plagiocephaly, which has caused the back of his head to become flat and his head to take on an asymmetrical shape. His mother noticed this feature in her third child only after they were discharged from the maternity hospital. Because of the thick hair Matvey was born with, the abnormal head shape was not immediately noticeable.

Doctors explained the cause simply: in the womb, the baby mostly lay on one side, which caused one side of the skull to develop more slowly. They recommended that Matvey be placed more often on the opposite side, and said that the issue would resolve on its own.

However, after two months, the defect did not disappear but became more pronounced. Examination confirmed that Matvey's brain was unaffected and that the problem was purely cosmetic. But in the future, it could also become a psychological issue, as sooner or later the child will ask his parents what is wrong with his head.

The only safe way to correct such a pronounced asymmetry is with a special molding helmet, which is made based on a 3D scan of the child's head. Doctors strongly recommend starting treatment as soon as possible, while the soft skull bones can still be corrected. However, the production of such devices is not covered for free, and for a family with three children, it would take a very long time to save up for the helmet.
