For several months now, Safiya has been living without kidneys, relying entirely on regular hemodialysis and constant medical supervision.
She was born prematurely. Her first days of life were spent in the intensive care unit, where she required mechanical ventilation to breathe and treatment for pneumonia.
The baby never made it home from the hospital; she was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder—Finnish-type nephrotic syndrome.
Because of this condition, Safiya’s body was losing vast amounts of protein through her kidneys—protein essential for her growth and development. Her immune defenses weakened, she developed anemia, and the risk of blood clots increased. For months, she required intravenous infusions, blood transfusions, and ongoing medication.
The situation was further complicated by a *Klebsiella* infection. The bacteria proved resistant to many antibiotics, and the infection has not yet been fully eradicated.
To stop the continuous loss of protein, doctors performed a staged procedure to remove both of Safiya’s kidneys.
Following the second surgery, Safiya remains in the hospital—currently in the pediatric ward. She requires post-operative care, continuous medical monitoring, and regular hemodialysis, which now performs the function of her missing kidneys.
The costs for her medical care continue to mount, and her family is unable to cover them on their own.
Please, let’s look after little Safiya and help pay for the treatment she needs!
