Alima was born in Kyrgyzstan on 21 August 2021, at 32 weeks. She was hospitalised for two months in a cubicle for premature babies. Premature babies often face many diseases, but above all the high risk of retinopathy, which leads to retinal detachment and complete loss of vision in a short time.
This is what happened to little Alima. On 2 December 2021 Alima was diagnosed with stage 4 retinopathy of prematurity and retinal detachment in both eyes. This means she could have lost her vision completely and irreversibly. In Alima's home country, Kyrgyzstan, there is no treatment for children like this, and Alima was faced with complete blindness.
Fortunately Alima was helped in Russia, thanks to the rapid fundraising and help from the Tooba community, at the Voyno-Yasenetsky Research & Practical Centre for Children in Moscow. She was successfully operated on, and irreversible changes in the retina were stopped. Postoperative prognosis is positive, the child has preserved her vision.
