Barsbek needs eye surgery to see!
Barsbek was born 11 weeks prematurely, weighing only 1,850 grams. Due to complications during pregnancy, doctors had to perform an emergency surgery on his mother.
The boy could not breathe on his own for another 10 days. After resuscitation, they fought for his life for three more weeks in the neonatal pathology department. On the 20th day after Barsbek's birth, his mother noticed the baby's eyes were blurry. Unfortunately, the Bishkek maternity hospital did not have an ophthalmologist to examine the child right away.
A month later, mom and Barsbek were discharged, and on the third day, the family went to an ophthalmologist at the state hospital, but even there the baby was not examined because of the quarantine in the department.
After an ultrasound of Barsbek's eyes at a private clinic, the parents were told to go urgently to a public hospital to examine the eye fundus. When Barsbeck was finally examined, he was diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity, an insidious and transient disease that can cause a child to lose his vision completely!
The parents found out from the doctors that they had to go to Almaty for laser photocoagulation. It took them another week to get the tests. Barsbek's parents were told to do an ultrasound of his eyes again to make sure that this was the stage of the disease that could be treated in Almaty.
But after another ultrasound, it turned out that the disease had progressed, and now only surgery can cure the child - in Moscow or St. Petersburg.
During consultations in Moscow Barsbek's parents received bad news - the condition of the boy's eyes is very grave. He needs a surgery on both eyes, but it must be done at 8-9 months of age when the processes inside the eyes are stable.
Parents are very excited that after the surgery Barsbek will have light vision of about 10%. At home, the parents supported the condition of the child's eyes with ointments and drops and were seen by an ophthalmologist every month.
On January 26, 2022 in Saint-Petersburg with the help of our foundation Barsbek had his first eye surgery. The attending physician said that the second stage of eye surgery will be needed for little Barsbek in 3.5 months.
Surgeries in St. Petersburg and Moscow are not free for CIS citizens, but Barsbek's family has already exhausted all their financial resources!
By raising funds for the surgery, together we will help Barsbek get clear vision in the future! If this surgery is not performed, Barsbek's vision may never be fully restored.
