Clean Games are team competitions in cleaning up local territories. The participants compete in waste collection and sorting, and winners are awarded. Clean Games participants can collect 5-10 times more waste than during a traditional clean-up. The impact is not only cleaning green and coastal areas, but also engaging locals into volunteering, raising their environmental awareness and territory development.
The project started in 2014 in Saint Petersburg, Russia and has become international. Since then more than 1900 games have been held in 560 Russian cities, the USA, China, Japan, and 28 more countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The games have united more than 125 000 players, who have collected more than 3400 tons of waste. Clean Games was awarded as the national winner from Russia in the Energy Globe Award in 2021, and became the international finalist in the category Youth. The awards were held within the COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference. The Clean Games methodology is spread free of charge.
There are no large-scale waste clean up campaigns in South Africa right now. As a result, the population and the environment suffer. We want to train African residents to organize Clean Games in their region in order to improve their quality of life. The BRICS YOUTH INNOVATION SUMMIT 2023 will be held soon in South Africa.
We can report about our project at the summit and hold the first Clean Games in South Africa. We will provide our practice to the environmental communities of the BRICS countries, and they will be able to carry out similar actions at home. This fee will help delegate our representative to the summit in South Africa.
