On December 15, 2024, two vessels transporting fuel oil suffered a shipwreck in the Kerch Strait during a severe storm. The work to eliminate the main pollution in the coastal zone and the Black Sea waters is ongoing. According to experts, even with the prompt elimination of the identified pollution, the oil spill will have a prolonged negative effect on natural ecosystems. Over time, some of the spilled oil products rise from the bottom during storms - they form oil slicks at sea or are washed ashore. This can have a negative impact on migratory birds, most of which feed in the sea and lagoons. The appearance of oil slicks can lead to the death of entire colonies. To reduce the negative impact on biodiversity, it is necessary to promptly identify and eliminate pollution. To this end, the "Nature and People" Foundation will provide 2 outboard motors for boats and 1 quadrocopter. This will allow regular monitoring of the sea, lagoons and island ecosystems over Protected Area. In 2025, it is necessary to monitor the protected areas at least once a week or after each storm, and in case oil products appear in the lagoons - daily. In the future, the equipment will be used by Protected Area staff in their daily work to protect the reserved territories, for scientific research and monitoring.
