Veronika was born at 29 weeks, weighing just 1,100 grams. From the very first moments of life, she had to fight: mechanical ventilation, an incubator, a cleft palate, and rare chromosomal abnormalities. After 4 months in intensive care, she was finally discharged home.
But at 6 months, Veronika began having epileptic seizures. A year of searching for treatment followed, along with cleft palate surgery and hormone therapy.
Today, Veronika is 4 years old. Thanks to daily therapy, she has learned to sit, enjoys interaction, and loves adaptive swimming. However, she still cannot walk or speak and suffers daily from seizures or the severe side effects of medication.
Doctors now suggest a ketogenic diet as a way to improve her quality of life. This is a treatment for epilepsy used when medications are not effective. Starting the diet requires close supervision from doctors who monitor the child’s condition and train parents to follow new nutritional guidelines and precise calculations - so the child can be free from seizures.
Veronika’s parents believe that the right treatment can help their daughter take new steps forward in her development.
