Mark has severe epilepsy. He needs an expensive medication

Mark was born at full term but suffered from serious medical conditions: intrauterine pneumonia and hypoxic-ischemic injury to the central nervous system. At one month of age, he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus and underwent shunt surgery.

Currently, little Mark cannot hold up his head, roll over, or sit up on his own. He makes no attempt to speak and does not even cry. When he was five months old, his parents noticed strange jerking movements resembling full-body spasms. Initially, these seemed to be reactions to light or sound, but they soon became more frequent and could last up to an hour. Following medical examinations, doctors diagnosed their son with West syndrome—a severe form of epilepsy. After the diagnosis, a medication regimen was selected for Mark, but it only suppressed the seizures temporarily; following one particularly severe seizure, the boy ended up in intensive care.

Doctors eventually found an effective anticonvulsant: the Italian drug Sabril. It successfully controlled the seizures and stabilized his condition. However, Sabril is not provided free of charge. Generic versions containing the same active ingredient are unsuitable for Mark, as they cause severe side effects and fail to stop the seizures.

Mark needs to take Sabril continuously, but the high cost of the medication has made it extremely difficult for the family to purchase it on their own.
