Amina is 2 years old. Typically, children at this age begin to speak and actively explore the world around them. Amina, however, is only just learning to hold her head up and make new sounds.
The little girl has an early-onset organic brain injury. She was born at 28 weeks and spent the first weeks of her life in intensive care on a ventilator; some time later, she suffered a brain hemorrhage.
During the first year of her life, Amina underwent numerous major surgeries. Following the first procedure, she began experiencing seizures, and in February of last year, she was diagnosed with West syndrome—a severe form of childhood epilepsy.
For a long time, doctors struggled to find an anti-seizure treatment for Amina that could stop the agonizing spasms. Only one medication, Sabril, proved effective for her. Although it is possible to obtain this drug free of charge through a medical commission’s decision, the family has been unable to secure it. They have been offered only Russian-made alternatives, but according to her parents, these do not help with the seizures—in fact, they actually make the convulsions worse.
We are launching a fundraiser to purchase 18 packs of Sabril for little Amina. This supply will cover her needs for the next six months. Please support this young girl and her family.
